Centenary of Golf in Sheffield
In early 1997, the club celebrated another important milestone, the centenary of the start of golf in Sheffield.
It is believed that golf started in Sheffield around 1895. However, the earliest newspaper articles mentioning the club appeared in February 1897. On Friday Feb 12, 1897, the Governor of New South Wales came to Sheffield for a game of golf with some local players. This event was celebrated 100 years later on February 15, 1997.
On that day nearly 30 years ago, the winners were Rowan Sherriff (Div 2) with 41 points and Greg Collis (Div 1) with 40 points. Both are still very active members of the club! A few other familiar names can be seen.
