Club Competitions

Regular Playing Days

Club competitions are usually played on Saturday and Tuesday.

Monthly medals are normally held on the first playing day (Saturday/Tuesday as applicable) of each month.

Saturday

Saturday is often a 10:30am shotgun start. Monthly Medal and Club Championships are the exceptions with tee-off times starting at 10am. Visitors are welcome to play in Saturday events although they may not be eligible to win some events such as Monthly Medals and Club Championships.

Tuesday

Tuesday is usually a 9:30am shotgun start. Exceptions are similar to Saturday with tee-off times starting at 9am. This day is traditionally for veterans and ladies and some days they may have separate competitions. All players are generally welcome to join these competition days.

COmpetition Rules

These definitions are the ones we use on our course - they may not be the same as those used at other clubs. We would be interested to hear of any variations, particularly if you think it makes a better game.

4BBB (or Four-Ball-Better-Ball)

Teams of two play, with the best score on each hole being the team score. It is usually played using Stableford scoring, although stroke play can be used. (Aside: Since there are usually two teams of two playing as a group, there are four balls in play! I still think it should be 2BBB.)

6 in 60

This is a game of 6 holes played in 60 minutes. All holes will be par 3.

Temporary tees will be set up for the longer holes. Holes 5, 6 and 7 won’t be used.

Men’s handicap limit will be set at 18, women's limit is 36, then divide the result by 3. So a man on 26 will play off 18/3 = 6, and a woman on 26 will play off 26/3 = 8.

Ambrose

A team game with two to four players in a team. The team handicap is half the average of the team. All players tee off, then the 'best' ball is selected, and all players play their second shot from that position (with the balls being placed within one club-length of the selected ball). This continues until a ball is holed. When on the green, all balls are placed within one hand-span of the selected ball. Generally, each player on the team has to have at least two (maybe more)  drives selected as the best drive.

American Foursomes (aka Pinehurst)

A variation on a Foursomes competition. Teams of two compete. Each player tees off, then each player plays their partner's ball. The best ball is then selected and the players play alternate shots with the one ball until the ball is holed.

American Foursomes (aka Pinehurst)

A variation on a Foursomes competition. Teams of two compete. Each player tees off, then each player plays their partner's ball. The best ball is then selected and the players play alternate shots with the one ball until the ball is holed.

Bogey

Each competitor plays match play against par. If the player scores par, the hole is halved and 0 is recorded. If better than par, the hole is won and +1 is recorded, and if worse, the hole is lost which is recorded as -1. Handicaps are used.

Note: although to bogey a hole means to take one more than par strokes to complete the hole, in times gone by bogey and par had the same meaning.

Canadian Foursomes

A variation on a Foursomes competition. Teams of two compete, but instead of alternating drives, each player tees off, and the 'best' drive is selected. The player whose drive was not selected then plays the second shot, and the players alternate shots until the ball is holed.  Each player must have at least two drives selected as the 'best' drive.
